Deflection Track Design for Metal Stud Wall Movement
Deflection Track

Understanding Deflection Track Applications

Did you know that metal stud-framed walls sometimes need to accommodate building movement? A deflection track is used in metal framing assemblies—typically exterior walls—when the wall system must move independently from adjacent building assemblies.

How Deflection Tracks Work

Deflection tracks are extra-wide metal tracks with extended legs designed to saddle the wall framing while allowing controlled movement. These tracks use slotted fastening so the framing can shift vertically within the channel without transferring structural movement into the wall assembly.

To accommodate this movement, the metal framing is intentionally cut shorter within the deflection track channel.

Movement and Coordination Considerations

A properly detailed deflection track helps prevent damage caused by structural movement while maintaining the integrity of the wall assembly. These systems are commonly used where floor deflection, structural shortening, or other building movement conditions are expected.

Wall Performance and Movement Accommodation

Allowing controlled movement within a wall assembly helps reduce the risk of cracking, deformation, or damage to finishes and envelope components. A properly detailed deflection track allows the structure to move independently while helping maintain the alignment and performance of the wall system.

Coordination between framing, cladding, and adjacent building assemblies is important to ensure movement can occur without compromising the exterior envelope.

Best Practices for Deflection Track

Design TOgether with your structural engineer to determine where deflection tracks are required and how much movement must be accommodated within the project. Proper coordination ensures the wall assembly can move safely without compromising performance or constructability.
