Opening Buck Installation for Secure Framing at Wall Openings
Opening Buck Detail

Understanding Opening Buck at Wall Openings

Did you know it is best practice to provide additional blocking at exterior building assembly openings? An opening buck is used to create a stable substrate for attaching window, door, and other opening frames within the wall assembly.

Purpose of Opening Buck Blocking

This blocking, typically made from wood, provides a reliable base for mechanical fasteners used to secure opening frames. An opening buck helps ensure proper alignment and long-term attachment performance at wall openings.

Material Selection for Opening Buck

Two layers of 3/4-inch plywood are often preferred over traditional 2x blocking. Plywood can be cut to the exact width required, providing greater flexibility and precision during installation.

Plywood blocking also offers additional thickness for fasteners to anchor into, creating a more solid substrate for GWB, transition strips, or AWRB integration.

Best Practices for Opening Buck

Providing an opening buck at exterior wall openings improves fastening support, detailing accuracy, and integration with surrounding building envelope components. Proper material selection and installation help ensure durable and reliable performance.
